PALMERSTON wingman Michaelis McMasters is more than comfortable in a black and white jumper.
McMasters, 172cm, was his creative best in his first game for his adopted club this week.
Three goals and several perfectly weighted hand and foot passes to teammates further down the ground saw his No. 4 jumper involved in several Magpie forward moves.
Last season he was a Buffalo but six months on the closeness of Northline Oval and an opportunity to work with the Magpies under joint coaches Shaun Cusack and Alwyn Davey has put 18-year-old McMasters in a confident frame of mind.
“I decided Palmerston was a lot more convenient for me and the club has welcomed me on board, which is great,’’ the Alice Springs speedster said.
“I’ve played a lot of my footy as a ruck rover but I reckon the wing is my spot with the space it offers and the chance to link up with teammates.
“I enjoyed it out there with the boys and found a bit of the footy so we’ll see how we go.”
In a twist, McMasters was about to make the trek to Adelaide to do pre-season with SANFL club West Adelaide.
“That was certainly my plan but I’m pretty settled here at Palmerston now and will probably play the season out with them,’’ he said.
“After that I don’t know. Thunder didn’t pick me this season despite me signing a two-year contract, so I might have to look elsewhere for a game in the southern winter.’’
Tiwi Bomber Shane Austral, a 15-year-old student from Tiwi College on Melville Island was another impressive performer in Round 2.
After a best on ground performance for the Tracy Village under-18s, Austral made the jump to Premier League football with a minimum of fuss.
From Melville’s Milikapiti community, he rotated through the wing and half forward and picked up several possessions in his side’s loss to Nightcliff.
